Nothing like going down to the wire on a deadline, is there? ;o)
When Jennifer first announced her Modern Mini Challenge I had no idea what I was going to do, ideas flitted vaguely through my head and then danced right back out again. And then Angela made an exquisite picture mini and an idea popped into my head and I had the perfect plan. I did a couple of sketches, I firmed it up in my mind, and then I went to shop my stash for supplies and… nada. I just didn’t have the fabric to render my idea in stitches, and I had no access to walk around one of those wonderfully large quilt shops our US cousins are blessed with to try and find supplies.
After a couple of rather dejected days, I then realised I had something I needed to make that would be perfect…
Can you guess what i forget to do? ;o)
I had fun with this – I dug out some of my Half Moon Modern and paper pieced the letters, then I created the iron in layers with bondaweb and free motion scribbly appliqued it in place, along with the holes on the sole plate. I quilted in dense lines below the iron, leaving the letters just echo quilted, and for the top part I echo quilted the letters, then quilted in iron steam with both white and variegated grey thread. I even had fun with the binding, with small strips of Remix from Ann Kelle. The finished product is 18″x21″ and now has a place on the door next to the iron!
Here’s a few close ups:

hahaha you brilliant genius!!
This is amazing, love all the wonderful details – great stuff!
Soooooo funny and cute!
Katy, I love this! Ha! Ha! I leave my iron on ALL the time! Thank goodness we have an auto-shut off iron.
It is so frustrating when you can't get the vision made exactly as you had in mind. But it looks like your creativity won out in the end! Very cute!
OMG I forget to turn the iron off all the time!!!!!I neeeeeeed a quilt like this! Too cute!!!
This is very cute and I love how you quilted the steam!
I don't know if I can say this but here goes, Are you F***ing kidding me? This is brilliant. What a great idea! You deserve a place in the finals for sure.
A great idea for a quilt. I leave my iron on all the time too, although it does have a very annoying beep/alarm so I do have to go and turn it off or I'd go insane from the beeping.
It's amazing and so detailed, love the quilted steam, good luck.
you win, hands down! love this, i need one too. my big iron with the automatic turn off died this week, i have been using my mini rowenta and it has been left plugged in… don't tell!
OK so the order is in for at least 10 of these – seems we all have the same problem. This is, dare I say it, AWESOME!!!
Oh my gosh, that is the most creative thing! I love it and my favorite part about it is the steam! I actually missed your original post but I saw it on pinterest (and pinned it of course!)
Katy this is so very clever – I don't have to look at the others – you win hands down! xx
Brilliant!! What a great idea and so well done!! Go Katy!!
Oh Kay that is so funny! Can you knock me up one that says – Take you school uniforms off and hang them up!
Thanks x
Hahahaha – love it! (but you didn't paper piece the iron????)
hahaha! that's brilliant! Good luck 😀
this is so cool. Good job 🙂
Absolutely awesome. I love it. I also love my iron that switches itself off into safety mode if I leave it. Highly recommend it!!
blimey Katy that's brilliant! I've lost count of the number of times I've left the iron on.
You amaze me, that is just terrific.
I don't know how that design just popped into your head.
Hugs
Kay
Such a great idea! Love it…and beautifully executed, too!
This is fun! I love the fabric you've chosen for the plate of the iron – it's so appropriate.
Lol. You are awesome.
Can I have one to hang on my door that says "Your keys are in your pocket. No need to look for them for the next half hour" ?!
The best ideas always come after a bit of frustration! Amazing, creative mini! I had to buy an iron with auto-off last month, because I never remember to turn it off. Of course auto-off is kind of annoying, but I guess it is better than burning down the house!
Ha! Love it! Thoughts of whether or not I unplugged the iron (both at home and work) keep me up at night!
I think you did a FANTASTIC job!! Wow, so many other entries! Fingers crossed you win.
I need to make this one and maybe a few others along this train of thought. Great job, I can't imagine anyone seeing this and not love it!
This is great Katy! Good luck! I could use one of these myself!
It's fabulous! I think I need one in my car saying 'yes, you did lock the front door' – I'm sick of getting back out to check!!!
I think it's fabulous!!! I love it! And a great reminder. I have an auto off one…but I'm sure my husband would be happier if I unplugged it. 😉
That's hilarious! I love it! :D:D:D
Very clever. Will you have the link available so we can vote?
Hugs
Love this – such a brilliant idea and so wonderfully stitched!! I would need to hang it by my front door as I often have to come back to check the iron:)
You've done such a fab job of this Katy and such a great idea too. Just reading through the comments here it is quite a common thing to forget, me included 😉
think this is great you have done a great job with it !!!
Holy buckets that is awesome! Congrats on a great finish! and Good luck!
Okay, it's official – this block is AMAZING!
Gosh this is fabulous! Very original and clever 🙂
