I picked up a fat quarter bundle of Indie when I knew I was heading over for SS, and my fabric mule was collecting things for me. I didn’t know what I actually wanted to do with it at first though, however having eyed up the giant star quilts, I knew it had found its purpose. Great minds must think alike, because someone else is making some too! I’m actually making 2, but at the moment only this one is finished, the other is basted and ready to quilt though.
Ta-da!
I have to admit to not having had any particular plan when I started the quilting, but I ended up having fun with the differently spaced lines radiating out from the centre. I was quite anal though, firstly they’re all 1/2″ from the seam, then 1″ from the last quilting line, then 1 1/2″, then 2″ and back in and out again. I decided to use the leftover Berry from the other star for the binding, as I happened to know it matched!
Final stats:
Fabric: Indie by Pat Bravo for Art Gallery Fabrics + Kona Amber and Berry
Thread: Pieced and quilted using Aurifil 50wt #2000
Batting: Quilter’s Dream 100% cotton
Size: 56″ x 56″
Quilting: Straight lines radiating from the centre
Quilted by: Lil old me
Pattern: Giant star out of my head (ie, no pattern followed or anything)
Finish #2 from both the January and Q1 finish-alongs!
Also, thank you to everyone for the lovely comments yesterday :o)
It looks lovely Katy, the quilting is just perfect!
It looks great – got to love some mega-mahusive HSTs!
Love it! Did you use a walking foot?
It's wonderful!
Well you know I love this since I might be one of the other great minds(said laughingly) who made two of these indie star quilts. I really like the amber for a background!
Looks fabulous! Still not pieced my,other half, and forgot to add it to my FAL list!
Love how you have quilted it
Absolutely love it with the orange background!
Well you know I love this design and the orange really is perfect!! I absolutely love it Katy.
Very cool Katy – love the quilting!

It looks amazing Katy. Love the bright background.
I love the colors!! You're not doing so bad with that to-do list 🙂
Love it! You beat me hands down… I'm at one top done and the other all the blocks need trimmed. Your background choices have worked so well too. Fab 🙂
This is extra!! beautiful!! I love your choice of colors!
I am making a giant star quilt at the moment too. Love, love, love yours in the Indie. Fab! Thanks for the quilting idea too – mine has been a nightmare as I ummm and ahhh over it. Time to jump in, me thinks.
Beautiful quilt. Indie is stunning against Kona Amber! I love how the quilting design looks on the back too. Yay for having two finishes already!!!
Yummy, even I love HSTs that big! (congrats on the job and the car btw)
Yay! A Big Fabulous fun star!! The orange background is brilliant! Great quilting too.
Eee! It's beautiful! I love the fabrics you used….the orange is just perfect!
Congrats on the finish. You're well on your way to winning a prize 🙂
WOw, glad you put in the size, looks like just a block in the pic, but what a fun project.
This looks fab! Great colours! Indie was the name of the fabric I couldn't remember the other day. I could see the design in my head not the fabric name. Did you quilt this on a normal sized sewing machine and how did you find it? Or what I'm saying is how do you think I'll find quilting one this size when I do mine? Although of course I have it in my head I want to stipple…yeah that could all end in tears lol
This finished off so nicely. The orange background really works well with these prints. The quilting works really nicely too.
I love yours: It's so bright!
You won't believe this but I have 2 of these in the making: 1 top is finished, just needs basting & quilting etc. The other one is lying in pieces: everything is cut from vintage sheets (like Jeni's from in Color Order)
Oh I love this so much! Gorgeous!!
Wow, you're just churning things out! Great job! And I feel you with the being-anal-about-the-randomosity-of-something. :>
THis is my favorite block to make… I know it as Northern Star. I am currently using it in black/white and red as a block for a Mickey Mouse theme quilt. I see how you top quilted it (FMQ)…but I have not had good luck with this much top stitching as it tends to make the quilt to stiff…do you have any other suggestions on how to top stitch it to make it more puffy and soft to cuddle with? I really dont' like doing SITD…but any other suggestions?
Katy, this is awesome! Indie looks so good against the Kona Amber. Fab job on the quilting, too! And congrats on 400 people watching your every move…
I would never have thought to use orange for the background – it somehow scares me – but I think your quilt is fab!
So cheerful and bright! I love how these gorgeous prints take center stage and how the orange background is fantastically saturated. Lovely finish!
BOTH of your Indie Stars are fan-flippin-tastic!! i love Indie and i love these big scale stars!!!! i had thought maybe i'd make one out of vintage 70's sheets someday (: but…you just got me to push the button on my shopping cart full of Indie today!!! so love it, and so love these – GREAT BEAUTIFUL JOB!
