For Brit Bee’s January block, Hadley decided she wanted us to make a supersized version of the Diamond Ripples block by Lara Finlayson in the Modern Blocks book. Thankfully she cut all the HSTs on her Sizzix for us, out of a collection of greys/blacks/whites and pinks/oranges, and left us to it:
I’d like to say it was all sweetness and light, but first I managed to sew the siggy block triangle into the bottom row (which I’d thankfully started with) because I didn’t seem to have enough of the greys/blacks/whites otherwise, and then found the missing piece stuck firmly to the back of another one in the row above, so having finished the bottom row entirely I had to go back and remove it.
Next I sewed the 2nd from bottom row, and when I went to add it to the bottom row, discovered that I’d got another of the bottom row blocks the wrong way round, so then I had to go back and fix that.
Finally I joined the 2nd bottom and bottom rows on the wrong side – argh!
Thankfully it’s done now…
Oooo really love the off-centre diamonds! I have seen a few of Hadley's blocks and they have all been fab – I am a fan of orange. Definitely tempted by the Sizzix after seeing all these speedily-cut HSTs…
I love the colors in this block.
Oh man, what bad stitching mojo! I'm so glad you stuck to it. It's a beautiful block!
It looks wonderful, despite the hassle!
Well worth it in the end! Looks brill! Jxo
It looks fab! And I anticipate broadly similar problems…
Oh I like that–the colors are great! HST always confuse me no matter how careful I am. I avoid them like the plague.
Hadley is going to have such a beautiful quilt and having only seen this block, I'll be interested to see what design it forms when they are all together. I am always doing things like you did in the 1st para – glad I'm not the only one!
That would have driven me crazy! But it looks fabulous! 🙂
Some days in the sewing room are like that. The block is totally fabulous!
Despite the headaches entailed, another great block for Hads.
Great block but were you channelling me because HST's and me always end up in this kind of drama 🙂
So glad it's not just me who stuffs those sort of things. Looks fab though Katy!
And it looks fabulous…
Don't drink and sew!!!
Thank you for all the (extra) stitching! xxx
What a great block!
They seem so simple, but those little beasts are tricky with the placement and easy to get switched! That block, though, is gorgeous!! Great job, and love all the fabrics she picked.. and CUT for you! Sweet!
Oh, the lengths we go to when making blocks for other people. 🙂 I love the color combination, though! It's very fresh and bright.
Ooops, and all HSTs, you are a good friend to persevere!
Lol I think Hadley summed it up, you need to take more water with it lassie! Beautiful!
Great looking block – not sure about the unpicking – if its only for Hadley I would not have bothered – hehehe!
Bugger, some days are just like that. I'm pleased that you found the missing block, I've done that too! Nore than once!!
The block looks great.
hopefully you have a good seam ripper as a good friend. Mine has been getting a lot of use lately. It was worth it because the block is great
It looks lovely despite the hassle! You have much more patience than I do 🙂
Nice block. Might use it for my new bee.
