I need to come up with a better name for this, but I made this bag for an upcoming trip, where the airline gives you a ‘Personal Bag’ along with your carry on bag. The dimensions were generous, as was the weight limit, and, anticipating the need for as much space as possible, I thought I’d make myself a bag to fit.
Measuring 18″ x 14″ x 8″, I wanted something that was relatively easy to assemble, and preserved the largest amount of volume possible. Using Koi canvas as my outer fabric, and a plain cream Klona cotton for the lining, it has the following features:
- Wrapped handles
- Detachable shoulder strap
- Zipped outer pocket
- Outer patch pockets
- Reinforced bottom, with feet
- Lining slip pockets
Outer zipped pocket:
1 outer patch pocket
Hanging from the shoulder strap:
End patch pockets (the same at either end)
Reinforced base with feet:
Wrapped handles:
It was the first time I’d tried the wrapped handles, and I’m rather pleased with how they turned out, even if I did have a couple of head scratching moments!
Lovely, I really like the dragonflies
Love all the details on this bag. I hope you'll publish the pattern!
Thank you so much :o)
It is lovely Katy, looks really practical but good-looking too. Do love the Koi fabric as well. Not surprised you had to think about assembling the handles! Juliex
Such a brilliant idea to make the bag according to the airline requirements! Really like your fabric choices too.
Perfect bag! I love the pocket and the feet! No soggy bottoms on your bags!
I love the koi! The wrapped handles look really nice and I like the pop of white from the zip! Outside pockets are always so useful.
I love it! Perfect for air travel. I'm guessing this is for your market trip?
Classy bag Katy, love the strong contrasts.
Future pattern I hope as this is fab!
Looks fab, adore the fabric choice!
Any excuse for a new bag eh? Well I for one am glad that a certain airline changed their policy – hope a pattern is on it's way :0)
Absolute brilliant! Love the Koi fabric and the round sides on the top, lots of pockets and the handles. Absolutely mine!
Neat. I like the fabric choice as well. Looks pretty practical too.
I love it and also your fabricx combo!
Love the feet in the base. Such a clever idea !
The fabric is fab….as is construction. Yep…gotta take advantage of the "personal bag" options!:)
Awesome bag! You've thought of everything! I love the snaps on the shoulder handle. And nice to see matching hooks again.
Gorgeous! Looks like the perfect travelling companion! Jxo
Clever, clever! Looks like you had a most productive weekend!
I love the shape of it, I really need one too.
You thought of everything with this bag…even little feet! I love all the details! It's perfect for traveling!
Good thinking and it is a very nicely styled bag too – nice one!!
You are CLEVER!!
LOVE this bag, it's awesome and very funcational!
Gah, guess I did this wrong…it's Sew Sweetness 😉
A great bag. I'm sure that will hold lot of snacks….
Personal Bag is so wrong! I believe 'Pushing the (airline) Limits" will be more appropriate when all your bags are crammed with loot! Very nice x
Great looking bag. I love that extra handbag/laptop bag allowance. That's where I usually stow that extra 5kg I need to pack on the way home.
Lovely and clever looking bag! The dragonflies are very apropriate for a ‘Personal Bag’!
Fabulous bag – really love the Koi dragonfly fabric too!
Gorgeous, love those dragonflies. x
Great looking and practical bag!! Well done!!!
Love your bag. It's a good style and size for taking away for a few days.
Such gorgeousness… such talent 🙂
So cute, Katy! This will serve you well 🙂

Hi Katy, love this and great idea to match the airplane dimensions. I have just the handle to finish on my whole lotta bag
Great bag, always a pain to get the size right, hope a patterns in the offing 🙂
Yes, I want one, thank you very much for adding to my list of things To Make. 😉 Lovely bag & I particularly like the wrapped handles too. Great idea!
Perfect!!!!!
I'm late, but had to add my voice to the chorus of praises for your bag! Great styling and fabrics. Reminds me of the flight bag given to me by BOAC back in the day when I flew to Europe. Maybe call it a flight bag? Or taking Flight, or some such. . . Like others, I will be waiting for the pattern! Xxxxx
I like it! It makes me think of when I see big houses shaped like cubes — they make me think, that house might not look super fancy, but I bet I'd love living in it with all that room! :>
Your wrapped handles turned out great!
