I was reading somewhere recently that this is going to be the year of the plus quilt, so it’s quite handy that Modern Plus Sign Quilts by Cheryl Brickey and Paige Alexander has just been published!

I was lucky enough to get sent a preview copy, and I had a lovely time reading through it, and looking at all the different ways you can use the humble plus block.  The great thing about it is that with the wide range of quilts in the book, you learn some different techniques, such as foundation paper piecing and applique alongside the regular piecing.

Some of my favourite quilts are on the cover above (I guess they were the authors’ favourites too!) but here are some of the other ones I liked:

Wouldn’t this one make a great, quick baby quilt?

I do like interlocking cross quilts.  I made one for Siblings Together a few years ago, but I didn’t have the great contrasts of colour that there are in this quilt.  Maybe I need to make another one…

Here’s a fun play on the cross block, and I really like the contrast of teeny bits and big bits:

Lastly, I love that the plusses in this quilt appear to be in a circle, I really like visual tricks like this, and the quilting really enhances it:

I think this book has a great range of options from beginners to experienced quilters, and would be a great addition to any bookshelf.  Grab yourself a copy now!
