Camera Challenge Wrap Up

by Katy Cameron | 02.11.2015 | Camera Challenge Posts, Camera Challenges 2015

Over the past 10 months we’ve meandered through a number of challenges in the hopes of trying to understand both our cameras and how to use them to get better photos. We started off with using the presets in month 1, and reviewed and linked up our results. We...

Camera Challenge 9 – Using Artificial Light Indoors

by Katy Cameron | 05.10.2015 | Camera Challenge Posts, Camera Challenges 2015

It’s that time of year in the northern hemisphere, the nights are drawing in, and if you happen to have one of those day job things, the chances of you seeing much daylight to take photos in are limited.  So now it’s time to embrace artificial lighting to...

Camera Challenge 8 – Using Natural Light Indoors

by Katy Cameron | 24.08.2015 | Camera Challenge Posts, Camera Challenges 2015

Last month we looked at how natural light behaved outdoors, so this month we’re going to move it on inside.  Now one of the challenges that people have with taking photos indoors is getting the right lighting, so this month your challenge is to explore...

Camera Challenge 7 – Using Natural Light Outdoors

by Katy Cameron | 27.07.2015 | Camera Challenge Posts, Camera Challenges 2015

Ahh, natural light…  This is a well-loved term, often used sneeringly by a certain section of the photographic community when suggesting that anything else is beneath contempt.  I have usually found that those suggesting this don’t know how to use anything else, but...

Camera Challenge 6 – Finding Your Inspiration And Gaining Your Composition

by Katy Cameron | 22.06.2015 | Camera Challenge Posts, Camera Challenges 2015

Hopefully you now understand the mechanics of how to get various effects in your photos, so the next obvious step is to look at the composition of the shot.  This part is completely personal, but there is a good chance that you have some people whose photography you...

Camera Challenge 5 – Going Fully Manual

by Katy Cameron | 25.05.2015 | Camera Challenge Posts, Camera Challenges 2015

Yay, we have now worked our way through from full auto mode to using the partially automated modes and now we’re going to look at Manual mode.  It was important to be able to see the effects of changing the main individual components which can be altered in Manual...

Well done to everyone who guessed the lighthouse y Well done to everyone who guessed the lighthouse yesterday!

There's a bit of a story behind this one. 2 weeks ago I had my last day at my old job after 10 1/2 years. Near the end of my first year in the job, after a very stressful couple of months with a demanding client where I was working practically around the clock, I finished that phase of the project and went online to find a last minute holiday to recover. I ended up spending a week in November in the old keeper's cottage in the lighthouse at Ardnamurchan, the most westerly point on the British mainland.

Sadly, you can no longer stay there, but in honour of that week away and my first great escape, I used the voucher from my 10 year long service award and some money my colleagues gave me when I left to purchase this set. This weekend, just before I start my new job, seemed the best time to build it.

The beaches in Mauritius don't enjoy a huge amount The beaches in Mauritius don't enjoy a huge amount of sand in comparison to beaches I'm used to in other parts of the world, and this one at Bain De Boeuf public beach on the north coast was desperately trying to contain the erosion with... sand bags. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

At the moment, I'm leaning towards some matchstick lines in different directions in different sections, but that thought is still percolating.

In the meantime, I'm wrestling my puff quilt through the machine, which is quite hard going

It would be fair to say that today's adventures di It would be fair to say that today's adventures didn't quite go to plan. We were going to go over the Connel Bridge, up Glen Coe and down Glen Orchy to get back to Taynuilt, but the weather was looking a bit grim inland (ie, you couldn't see the tops of the mountains for the clouds)

Instead, we started with a little genealogical research at Ardchattan Parish Church, just across Loch Etive from Taynuilt, where we promptly found no-one (not entirely surprising for agricultural labourers)

We stopped to take a photo of the Connel Bridge blending in very well with the mountains on the Isle of Mull in the background, before heading along to see various sides of Castle Stalker. I had a sit in protest on a bench at the Castle Stalker viewpoint because we didn't get lunch OR cake when we were out! Something about few places doing lunch on Mondays and allergies 😒
