Description
Original Featherweight motors come armed with a pair of carbon motor brushes, one at the top and the other at the bottom of the motor, held in place with Bakelite screws.
Although they do not often need to be replaced, sometimes when a machine has been well loved and used, they wear down, in which case they should be replaced as a pair to keep balance in the motor.
If you do need to change out the brushes, using a flat tipped screwdriver to very gently unscrew the motor cap screws and reveal the brushes underneath – I will repeat how gently you need to be here or the Bakelite might shatter, so slow and steady is the way to go, and I wouldn’t recommend opening them unless you really think your motor is sluggish and under performing!
